Hasmins Friends
About Hasmin’s Friends:
Hasmin’s Friends is the child sponsorship program of Vapor Sports Ministries. For less than the price of a daily cup of coffee, you can provide a child in a third world environment with the means to an education and enough food to eat.As a Hasmin’s friend, your $42 a month sponsorship provides tuition, books, supplies, and school uniforms for a child enrolled in a Vapor Sports league. As part of the program, each child also receives a nutritious meal each day, even when school is not in session.
Hasmin’s friends is limited to children enrolled in a Vapor sports league, where Vapor staff get to know them, disciple them, and are in a position to know the circumstances of their lives and provide the help they need. For your part, you will receive a photo and biography of your sponsored child and exchange correspondence four times a year. Most of all, you will receive the blessing of providing hope and sustainable life change to a young, growing disciple of Christ in an environment that provides little hope at all.
Hasmin’s Story:
Micah McElveen first met Hasmin on the soccer fields at the Vapor Sports center in Kawangware, one of the largest and fastest growing slums in Nairobi, Kenya. Hasmin’s thin frame and yellowed hair told a story of malnutrition. His ragged clothes reflected a life of extreme poverty and neglect. As Micah played soccer with some boys, a 20-shilling coin fell out of his pocket. Hasmin’s keen eyes spotted the shiny coin right away. He tugged at Micah’s sleeve and offered his find in his tiny, outstretched hand. For Hasmin, 20 shillings would have provided food for three days. Micah was touched by Hasmin’s honesty and recognized character at work in this little boy who had so little else in his life. Micah rewarded Hasmin by letting him keep the coin.
It did not take long to learn that Hasmin had lost his father and grandmother to AIDS. It was also revealed that his mother was seriously ill from the effects of HIV and unable to provide for Hasmin – an all too familiar circumstance of life in Kawangware. Micah determined that he could not just walk away.
So was the beginning of a friendship that would bless Micah’s heart. He found a foster home for Hasmin and enrolled him in school, both of which provide safe, nurturing environments.
Hasmin was one of many children in Kawangware and other desperate environments in need of a supportive friend. Hasmin’s Friends were born out of that need.
